Common Sense Posted by Patriot Wednesday, 2006-May-31 This is a subject that has been bothering me for some time now. I have and hopefully always will be the kind of person that values diversity. I recognize that one of the things that makes the USA great is it's wide range of history, cultures and ideals that have been the fire used to forge the best country on earth to live and raise a family. I'm proud to be an American. Countless people have endured long and dangerous journeys to have a piece of this American dream. Some even enter our country illegally, risk deportation and accept unusually low pay and horrible conditions just to have a part of this wonderful country we live in. All too frequently, though, that almost primal drive for a better life in America abruptly stops when it comes to learning our language. A short time later, when certain political sharks smell blood in the water,(easy votes), legislation starts showing up here and there to make things bi-lingual. This all has happened slow enough so that the average citizen didn't notice it. Now, as I talk to people about this issue, everyone feels the same way. Namely we speak English in the USA, we always have, anyone coming here knows that, and why are we footing the bill because they are too lazy to learn the language of the country THEY CHOSE TO COME TO! I've been to Ellis Island and seen the records of the countless millions of immigrants that have made their way to the US to make a better life for themselves, their children and grandchildren. English wasn't the language of most of them, but guess what, they learned. And happily! This is the land of opportunity! Learning the language was a given. As I conclude this post, let me reemphasize that I don't hate anyone, any language or any race. I am simply not happy with this current political direction and If I can raise one person's awareness a day, then it's all worth while. Previous page | Next page
